New 13-Digit Tax ID in Nigeria: What It Means for Individuals, Businesses, and Corporate Bank Accounts

Nigeria’s tax identification system has entered a new phase with the introduction of the new 13-digit Tax ID. This new Tax ID now replaces the old 10-digit TIN and is designed to make tax identification easier, more secure, and more connected across Nigeria’s tax system.

The Tax Identification Number, now commonly called Tax ID, is a unique number jointly issued by the Nigeria Revenue Service and the Joint Revenue Board for identifying individuals and businesses for tax administration, compliance, and enforcement. The official Nigerian Tax ID Portal describes it as a unique number issued in line with Nigerian tax laws for individuals and entities.

For individuals, the Tax ID is linked to the National Identification Number, NIN. For businesses, companies, and registered entities, it is linked to the Corporate Affairs Commission registration number. This means individuals can retrieve their Tax ID using NIN, while registered businesses can retrieve theirs using CAC details.

What Is the New 13-Digit Tax ID?

The new 13-digit Tax ID is a unique tax number assigned to taxable persons and organizations in Nigeria. It is used to identify taxpayers across federal and state tax systems.

Before now, many Nigerians knew the old TIN as a 10-digit number used for tax records, bank documentation, business registration support, contract processing, and other official purposes. With the new system, the 13-digit Tax ID is becoming the preferred identity number for tax-related services.

The main purpose is to create a more unified taxpayer identity system. Instead of having scattered tax records across different platforms, the new Tax ID helps connect a person or business to one recognized tax profile.

Why the New Tax ID Matters

The new Tax ID matters because it is now becoming important for banking, employment documentation, government contracts, official filings, business compliance, and other tax-related services. The Nigeria Revenue Service Tax ID portal states that a valid Tax ID is mandatory for accessing many public and private services, including banking, employment documentation, government contracts, and statutory services.

This means individuals and businesses should not ignore it. Even if you already have an old TIN, it is advisable to retrieve the new 13-digit Tax ID and keep the slip safely.

For business owners, this is especially important because banks are now accepting the Tax ID slip for corporate account opening. This is good news for registered businesses because it means they can use the new Tax ID slip as part of their documentation when opening a corporate bank account.

Banks Now Accept Tax ID Slip for Corporate Account Opening

One of the most important updates is that banks are now accepting the Tax ID Slip for corporate account opening.

This means a registered business, company, or organization can retrieve its Tax ID using its CAC registration number and present the Tax ID slip as part of the required bank documentation.

This is useful for business owners who want to open a company account, upgrade from a personal account to a business account, or complete bank compliance requirements.

However, the Tax ID slip does not replace every other bank requirement. Banks may still request other documents such as CAC certificate, status report, MEMART for companies, valid means of identification, BVN, passport photograph, proof of address, board resolution where applicable, and other internal compliance documents.

The Tax ID slip simply helps confirm the business’s tax identification record.

Who Needs the New Tax ID?

The new Tax ID is useful for both individuals and registered entities.

Individuals need it for tax records, employment documentation, banking, official transactions, government-related services, and personal tax compliance.

Businesses need it for corporate bank account opening, tax filing, contracts, invoices, government procurement, compliance documentation, and business verification.

Companies, business names, NGOs, partnerships, schools, churches, associations, consultants, freelancers, and other taxable entities may all need a Tax ID depending on the nature of their activities.

How Individuals Can Retrieve Their Tax ID

Individuals can retrieve their Tax ID using their NIN.

To do this, visit the official Tax ID portal:

https://taxid.jrb.gov.ng

or

https://taxid.nrs.gov.ng

On the portal, choose the Individual option.

Select National Identification Number as the retrieval method.

Enter your 11-digit NIN.

Click Retrieve Tax ID.

You may be asked to enter your first name, last name, and date of birth exactly as they appear on your NIMC record.

After successful verification, your 13-digit Tax ID will be displayed.

The Punch also reported that individuals retrieve their Tax ID by selecting the Individual tab, entering their NIN, and confirming their details as captured by NIMC.

How Businesses Can Retrieve Their Tax ID

For businesses, the process is different because the Tax ID is linked to CAC registration details.

To retrieve a business Tax ID, visit:

https://taxid.jrb.gov.ng

or

https://taxid.nrs.gov.ng

Click the Corporate tab.

Select the appropriate organization type.

Enter the CAC registration number.

Click Retrieve Tax ID.

If the details match the record, the 13-digit Tax ID will be displayed.

This applies to registered business names, companies, and other CAC-registered entities. Sahara Reporters also reported that non-individuals are required to use their CAC registration number to retrieve the 13-digit Tax ID.

What You Need Before Retrieving Your Tax ID

For individuals, you need your NIN, correct first name, correct last name, and date of birth as captured on your NIMC record.

For businesses, you need the CAC registration number and the correct organization type.

If the information you enter does not match the database, the portal may not return your Tax ID. In that case, you may need to check whether your NIN details or CAC details are correct.

Why Some People May Have Problems Retrieving Their Tax ID

Some people may experience errors while trying to retrieve their Tax ID. This can happen for different reasons.

The NIN may be incorrect.

The name may not match the NIMC record.

The date of birth may be entered wrongly.

The CAC registration number may be typed incorrectly.

The business record may not yet be properly synchronized.

The wrong organization type may have been selected.

The portal may also experience temporary technical issues.

If this happens, users should check their details carefully and try again. If the problem continues, they may need to contact the official support channel or visit the nearest tax office.

Is NIN the Same as Tax ID?

No. NIN and Tax ID are not exactly the same.

NIN is your National Identification Number issued by NIMC. It is used for national identity verification.

Tax ID is your tax identification number used for tax administration.

The new system links both records for individuals, but they still serve different purposes. Your NIN helps retrieve or connect your Tax ID, but the Tax ID itself is the number used for tax-related services.

Is CAC Number the Same as Business Tax ID?

No. CAC number and Tax ID are not the same.

The CAC number identifies a business or company in the Corporate Affairs Commission database.

The Tax ID identifies that business for tax administration.

The new portal uses the CAC registration number to retrieve the business Tax ID, but the two numbers are not the same.

Why This Is Important for Corporate Account Opening

Corporate bank accounts are important for businesses that want to operate professionally. A corporate account separates business money from personal money and helps a business look more credible to customers, partners, and institutions.

Banks usually require tax information before opening or fully activating corporate accounts. With the new Tax ID system, business owners can retrieve their 13-digit Tax ID and provide the Tax ID slip during account opening.

This can help reduce delay, especially for businesses that previously had issues with TIN generation or old tax records.

Important Documents Banks May Still Request

Even though banks now accept the Tax ID Slip, business owners should be prepared with other documents.

Common corporate account opening documents may include CAC certificate, CAC status report, business name registration certificate, MEMART for limited liability companies, valid ID of proprietor or directors, BVN, passport photographs, utility bill, business address, phone number, email address, board resolution, and Tax ID slip.

The exact requirement depends on the bank, the business type, and the account category.

Benefits of the New 13-Digit Tax ID

The new Tax ID system has several benefits.

It makes taxpayer identification easier.

It reduces confusion between old TIN records and newer identity systems.

It allows individuals to retrieve Tax ID using NIN.

It allows businesses to retrieve Tax ID using CAC registration number.

It supports corporate bank account opening.

It improves tax compliance.

It helps government agencies and financial institutions verify taxpayers more easily.

It supports a more digital tax administration system.

It reduces unnecessary physical visits when the portal works properly.

Safety Warning: Use Only Official Portals

Because Tax ID is now important, fraudsters may start creating fake websites or fake agents claiming they can retrieve Tax ID for people.

Use only official portals:

https://taxid.jrb.gov.ng

https://taxid.nrs.gov.ng

Do not enter your NIN, CAC number, BVN, OTP, or personal information on random websites.

Do not pay anyone who cannot show you a proper process.

Do not share your Tax ID slip carelessly with unknown people.

Do not allow anyone to use your NIN or CAC number for suspicious activities.

What Business Owners Should Do Now

If you own a registered business, retrieve your new 13-digit Tax ID and save the slip.

Keep both soft copy and printed copy.

Submit it to your bank if requested.

Use it for tax-related documentation.

Make sure your CAC record is correct.

Make sure your business name and registration number match your bank documents.

If you plan to open a corporate account, go with your CAC documents and Tax ID slip.

Final Thoughts

The new 13-digit Tax ID is now an important part of Nigeria’s tax and business documentation system. For individuals, it connects tax identity with NIN. For businesses, it connects tax identity with CAC registration details.

For corporate account opening, the confirmation that banks are accepting the Tax ID Slip is a major relief for business owners. It means businesses can now retrieve their Tax ID online and use it as part of their bank documentation.

Every individual, business owner, consultant, and company director should take this update seriously. Retrieve your Tax ID, keep the slip safe, and make sure your details are correct. As Nigeria moves deeper into digital tax administration, proper identity records will become even more important.

CAC Name Search Nigeria: How to Check Your Preferable Business Names and Company Name

Before you pay anyone to register a business name in Nigeria, the first thing you should do is a CAC name search. Many people lose money because they trust fake agents, duplicated business names, edited certificates, or people who claim a name is “available” without checking the official Corporate Affairs Commission portal. The CAC name search helps you confirm whether a business name, company name, incorporated trustee, or registered entity already exists in the CAC database. It also helps you avoid choosing a name that may later be rejected during registration. As of 2026, the official CAC search process is done through the Corporate Affairs Commission’s online platforms, especially the public search section and the Company Registration Portal, also called the CRP or iCRP portal. The CAC public search page allows users to search existing companies and business entities by categories such as All, RC Number, AV Code, and Approved Name. A CAC name search before registering or transact...

NIN Registration in Nigeria: Meaning, Requirements, Benefits, and How to Get Your NIN

The National Identification Number, commonly called NIN, is now one of the most important identity records in Nigeria. It is not just a number printed on a slip. It is a unique identity number connected to a person’s official record in the National Identity Database. Once a person is enrolled, the number becomes part of that person’s identity for life. In simple terms, NIN helps the government and approved institutions confirm that a person is who they claim to be. This is why it is now requested for many important services across the country. Today, NIN is required in many areas of daily life. You may need it when registering or linking your SIM card, opening or updating a bank account, applying for an international passport, correcting official records, processing certain school or employment documents, and accessing some government-related services. Many organizations now use NIN as a way to reduce identity fraud, duplicate records, and false information. This is why every Nigerian ...
